New Ground number 139

First visit = 19/11/16 Aldershot 1-2 Macclesfield (National League)

A ground I have had somehow managed to miss over the last few years, but I finally managed to make the trip to do commentary on this league game, with both sides fighting for a play-off place.

Not the best start to my visit to Aldershot, with the motorway closed and nearby roads crawling along, we didn’t arrive at the ground until 15 minutes after kick off (a journey of nearly 6 hours for 200 miles. The non-travelling Silkmen faithful were treated to a live second half commentary and an apology broadcast from the backseat of a car at 2.50 when we realised we weren’t going to make it.

Aldershot had a spell in League 2, but find themselves back in the Conference. The ground is compact, with capacity around 7,000 and has two seated areas and terracing behind either goal. In many ways it’s a lot like the Moss Rose, with signs that things are patched up as they go wrong and several costly improvements required to tidy it up. But its full of character and is one the best examples of a traditional football ground.
